Description
German recipe for overnight oats with apple and walnuts, a perfect and healthy breakfast option.
Ingredients
- 1 Cup Old-fashioned oats
- 1 Cup Milk (animal or vegetable)
- 1/2 Cup Greek Yoghurt (optional) (for creaminess and additional protein)
- 1 Cup Chopped apple
- 1/2 Cup Chopped walnuts
- 2 Tablespoons Honey or maple syrup (adjust to taste)
- 1 Teaspoon Cinnamon (optional, for taste)
- 1 Teaspoon Vanilla extract (optional, for taste)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix the oats, chopped walnuts, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Check if the ingredients are well mixed.
- In a separate bowl, whisk the milk, Greek yogurt (if using), honey or maple syrup, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Pour the wet ingredients over the dry ingredients. Stir thoroughly to ensure all the oats are well covered and evenly mixed.
- Gently fold the diced apples into the oat mixture. Ensure they are evenly distributed.
- Divide the mixture into individual airtight containers (such as canning jars or meal-prep containers) to facilitate easy storage. Leave some space at the top for the mixture to expand.
- Seal the containers and refrigerate. Let the oats soak overnight (or at least 6-8 hours) to allow the flavors to meld and the oats to soften.
- In the morning, take the oats out of the fridge, stir well, and enjoy cold. If desired, add additional toppings like more diced apples, walnuts, or a drizzle of honey before serving.
Notes
Make sure to use old oats as quick oats can get mushy, adjust the sweetness before refrigerating. Remember that some toppings can also add sweetness. Consider adding other spices such as nutmeg or ginger, or dried fruits such as raisins or cranberries for additional texture and flavor. Don’t skip the soaking time, make sure there’s enough space in the jars for the oats to expand while they absorb liquid. Ensure the mixture is well stirred before it goes into the fridge; this prevents lump formation and ensures a balanced taste in every bite.
