Description

Savory meatballs served with bell pepper sauce make a perfect dinner. The recipe provides a step-by-step process to prepare this delicious dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 450 g ground beef or ground turkey (For a vegetarian option, use 450 g lentils (boiled and pureed) or a plant meat substitute.)
  • 50 g plain breadcrumbs (Use gluten-free breadcrumbs or crushed oats for a gluten-free option.)
  • 25 g grated Parmesan cheese (Nutritional yeast can be used for a dairy-free option.)
  • 1 large egg (Use a flax egg (1 tbsp ground flaxseed mixed with 2.5 tbsp water) for a vegan option.)
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped (Garlic powder (1/2 teaspoon) can be used if fresh garlic is not available.)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped (Shallots or green onions can be used instead for a milder taste.)
  • 10 g fresh parsley, chopped (Dried parsley (1 tbsp) can be used if fresh is not available.)
  • 1 tsp salt (Use your preferred seasonings, however adjust the salt accordingly.)
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper (Use your preferred seasonings, however adjust the salt accordingly.)
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning (optional) (A combination of dried basil, oregano, and thyme can be used.)

Instructions

  1. Mix ground meat (beef, pork, or turkey), breadcrumbs, egg, chopped garlic, chopped parsley, salt, and pepper in a bowl.
  2. Heat oil on a large pan, add the meatballs in batches. Stir-fry them for 5-7 minutes on all sides.
  3. In the same pan, add the chopped onions and sauté them for 2-3 minutes until they are transparent. Add the chopped bell pepper and the chopped garlic and cook them for another 3-4 minutes until they are soft.
  4. Pour 1 cup vegetable or chicken broth and 1 can (400 g) chopped tomatoes. Stir to combine. Season with salt, pepper and any herbs (like oregano or basil).
  5. Place the browned meatballs gently back into the pan with the sauce. Cover the pan, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about 20-25 minutes.
  6. Serve the meatballs and the sauce over pasta, rice, or alone. Garnish with fresh parsley or grated cheese, if desired.

Notes

Do not over mix the meatball mixture as this could lead to tough meatballs. Mix only until everything is combined. Do not skip the searing process as it adds flavor. Avoid overcrowding the pan as this could lower the temperature and cause steaming instead of searing. Cook in batches if necessary. Check whether the meatballs are fully cooked through for safety and best texture. Use a meat thermometer for accuracy.
