  • 2 Medium Yukon Gold or red potatoes (Alternatively, you can use waxy potatoes for a firmer texture)
  • 1 Teaspoon Salt (For boiling the potatoes, Additional salt to taste)
  • ½ Teaspoon Black pepper (For seasoning the salmon)
  • 2 Tablespoon Olive oil (For frying the salmon)
  • 2 Tablespoon Fresh dill (Chopped, For garnish and flavor)
  • 1 Tablespoon Lemon juice (Freshly squeezed to enhance flavor)
  • ½ Small red onion (Finely chopped, For additional crunch and flavor)
  • 1 Tablespoon Capers (Optional for additional flavor, rinsed and chopped)

Instructions

  1. Gather ingredients: Confirm that you have all the necessary ingredients: salmon (fresh or canned), potatoes, carrots, peas, pickles, onions, mayonnaise, mustard, salt and pepper
  2. Boil potatoes: Technique: Boiling, Temperature: High heat, Estimated Time: 15-20 minutes, Instructions: Peel and cut the potatoes into even cubes. Place in a pot with salted water, bring to a boil and cook until tender.
  3. Cook carrots: Technique: Boiling, Temperature: High heat, Estimated Time: 10-15 minutes, Instructions: Peel and cut the carrots into small pieces. Place in a separate boiling pot of water and cook until tender but still firm.
  4. Prepare salmon: Technique: Baking or use canned, Temperature (when baked): 375°F (190°C), Estimated Time (when baked): 15-20 minutes, Instructions: If using fresh salmon, season with salt and pepper and bake in the oven until cooked through. If using canned salmon, simply drain the liquid.
  5. Boil peas: Technique: Boiling, Temperature: High heat, Estimated Time: 3-5 minutes, Instructions: Put the peas into boiling water and cook until they are bright green and tender.
  6. Chop additional ingredients: Dice the pickles and onions into small pieces. Set aside.
  7. Combine ingredients: In a large mixing bowl combine the cooled potatoes, carrots, peas, the (shredded) salmon, the diced pickles and onions.
  8. Prepare dressing: In a small bowl mix together mayonnaise, mustard, salt, and pepper to taste. Adjust according to preference.
  9. Dress the salad: Pour the dressing over the combined ingredients and gently mix until everything is evenly covered.
  10. Cool the salad: Cover the salad with plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour before serving for the flavors to meld together.

Notes

Tip: Allow potatoes and carrots to fully cool before you mix to prevent the dressing from becoming too runny. Common mistake: Overcooking the vegetables can result in a mushy texture; always check the tenderness and drain immediately.
